A few weeks ago, my family and I escaped to South Florida for some much-needed warmth, sunshine and adventures that did not involve layers and layers of clothing. The mangroves near where we stay inspire me with their architecture, their density and porosity as well as with their support of a diverse array of wildlife. It’s always a highlight of the time I spend in Florida to go fishing in these “forests”. Often when I go in the winter, it’s the first time in weeks that I have felt warm. I truly enjoy the primeval and mysterious atmosphere of a misty dawn that burns off to reveal electric blue with a low line of rich green all around. After the profound quiet of the winter here in New England, to be surrounded by all sorts of exuberant sounding and colored life refreshes me and enlivens my senses, coaxing me out of dormancy and introspection and into a renewed vigor to engage with the outdoor world.
